Brazil's National Anthem - Hino Nacional Brasileiro

The music was originally composed for band by the Brazilian composer Francisco Manuel da Silva. In 1831, it became popular with verses that celebrated the abdication of Brazil's first emperor Dom Pedro I (1831).

By the time his son Dom Pedro II would be crowned emperor (1840), the lyrics were substituted by new ones written by Ovídio Saraiva de Carvalho, but the music remained unmodified because of its great popularity. It was then unofficially declared Brazil's National Anthem.

After the proclamation of republic in 1889, the governors initiated a contest to choose a new national anthem, which was won by Leopoldo Miguez, but popular manifestations against the new anthem made the chief of the temporary government, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca, officiate the original music by Francisco Manuel da Silva and the lyrics by Ovídio Saraiva de Carvalho as the national anthem.

The song composed by Leopoldo Miguez, which won the contest, was then officiated the anthem to the proclamation of republic.

In 1922, the poem by the poet and journalist Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada was officiated as the new lyrics of the national anthem.

I

Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
De um povo heróico o brado retumbante.
E o sol da liberdade, em raios fúlgidos,
Brilhou no céu da pátria nesse instante.

II

Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido,
Ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo,
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América,
Iluminado ao sol do Novo Mundo!

Se o penhor dessa igualdade
Conseguimos conquistar com braço forte,
Em teu seio, ó liberdade,
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte!

Do que a terra mais garrida
Teus risonhos, lindos campos têm mais flores;
"Nossos bosques têm mais vida"
"Nossa vida" no teu seio "mais amores".

Ó pátria amada,
Idolatrada,
Salve! Salve!

Ó pátria amada,
Idolatrada,
Salve! Salve!

Brasil, um sonho intenso, um raio vívido,
De amor e de esperança à terra desce,
Se em teu formoso céu, risonho e límpido
A imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece.

Brasil de amor eterno seja símbolo
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado,
E diga o verde-louro desta flâmula
- Paz no futuro e glória no passado.

Terra adorada
Entre outras mil
És tu Brasil,
Ó pátria amada!

Terra adorada
Entre outras mil
És tu Brasil,
Ó pátria amada!

Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil,
Pátria amada,
Brasil!

Dos filhos deste solo és mãe gentil,
Pátria amada,
Brasil!
