Pop goes the weasel

"A penny for a spool of thread,
A penny for a needle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop goes the Weasel.

CHORUS
All around the cobbler’s bench,
The monkey chased the weasel.
The monkey thought ‘twas all in fun,
Pop goes the weasel.

Rufus has the whooping cough,
And Sally has the measles,
And that’s the way the doctor goes,
Pop goes the weasel.

CHORUS
Pop goes the weasel."

"Pop Goes the Weasel" is a nursery rhyme which dates back to 17th-century England, and was spread across the Empire by colonists. The monkey is believed to be an American innovation, devolving from the word 'money', much as 'weasel' may have devolved from "whistle". "Monkey" is also believed to be a nineteenth century term for a public house drinking vessel."
