The Party Scene

It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house, a huge house with a beautiful Christmas tree. The Stahlbaums are having their annual Christmas party and many guests arrive to celebrate it with the family. The children, Fritz and Clara, welcome their friends.

Clara's godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, entertains the guests with his magical toys. The first puppet which Drosselmeyer brings to the party is a small German Doll that dances with him. Drosselmeyer also presents toy soldiers and three Porcelain ballerina dolls who dance for the guests. Then two wonderful toys, the Harlequin and Columbine dance a pas de deux around the room to the delight of the party.

Clara and her friends listen to Drosselmeyer as he tells them about the presents he
has brought to the party to give them.

Drosselmeyer distributes gifts to the children, who begin to open them quickly. Although Drosselmeyer's gift to Fritz is quite nice, his gift to Clara, a beautiful Nutcracker is the hit of the party. Fritz is jealous. He grabs the nutcracker from Clara and breaks it.

Clara is heartbroken, so Herr Drosselmeyer attempts to repair the Nutcracker before handing it back to her. Everyone gathers around as Drosselmeyer pulls out a white handkerchief to fix the broken Nutcracker.

After all the guests leave and the children go to bed, Clara, worried about her beloved Nutcracker, gets up and goes downstairs. She falls asleep under the tree and is taken to a world of Christmas fantasy where her nutcracker has grown to the size of a human.

Clara saves her Nutcracker Prince by throwing her shoe at the Mouse King and defeating him. The Mouse King goes down. The mice all swarm off as they mourn their leader.
