 ANTILLES (WEST INDIES)

Group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, located in the Central America region. The Antilles, or West Indies, are formed by the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles and the Bahamas (an archipelago located on the south of Cuba, between Florida and the island of Hispaniola).

Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico form the Greater Antilles. Cuba is the largest island of the Greater Antilles and Hispaniola (which is diveded in two nations: Haiti and Dominican Republic) is the second.

The Lesser Antilles are formed by Guadelupe, Dominica, Martinica and others. These islands are the top of a chain of mountains which submerged and that connected the South to the North America.

Politically these islands comprise 13 independent nations and a number of colonial dependencies, territories and possessions: The Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic (both occupy Hispaniola), Puerto Rico, the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago.
